Location: This memorial stands in front of St Jude's Church, Accrington Rd, Blackburn.
OS ref: 103 SD700283
The memorial was erected to commemorate the men from the Parish of St Thomas (Lambeth Street) and those who attended St Thomas School who were killed during the First World War.
Originally the memorial stood by the church but in the early 1980s the church was demolished and the memorial was moved into the grounds of Blackburn Cathedral (formerly St Mary's Parish Church), see photo above left.
In July 2003 the memorial was moved to St Jude's Church which amalgamated with the Parish of St Thomas.
The wording reads
THIS MEMORIAL IS ERECTED IN HONOUR OF THE BRAVE MEN
FROM ST THOMAS'S CHURCH AND SCHOOLS,
WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1919
AND WHOSE NAMES ARE INSCRIBED BELOW.
"GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS"
There are 186 names commemorated on the memorial including that of Second Lieutenant John Schofield who was award the Victoria Cross.
